GLP-1 și apneea de somn: ce arată 6 studii
A new meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials reports that GLP-1 receptor agonist-based therapies were associated with lower apnea-hypopnea index and body weight in adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea. The review included six trials and 1,069 participants, but substantial variation between studies limits how precisely the pooled effects should be interpreted.

What did the sleep-apnoea meta-analysis examine?
The paper, published in Sleep and Breathing on 6 October 2026, reviewed randomized controlled trials comparing GLP-1 receptor agonist-based therapies with a control intervention in adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea. The authors searched electronic databases and trial registries up to 10 February 2025. Their outcomes included the apnea-hypopnea index, body weight, oxygen desaturation index, minimum oxygen saturation, blood pressure and adverse events.

Six trials met the inclusion criteria. Four evaluated liraglutide and two evaluated tirzepatide. This matters because the result is not a test of one single molecule or one uniform treatment protocol. It is a pooled estimate across different studies, populations and interventions. The authors therefore describe the findings as evidence about GLP-1 receptor agonist-based therapies in the studied settings, not as proof that every agent has the same effect.
What changes did the authors report?
Compared with control, the therapies were associated with a mean reduction in the apnea-hypopnea index of 9.99 events per hour. The 95% confidence interval ranged from 16.47 fewer to 3.50 fewer events per hour, and the statistical test was reported as significant. Body weight was lower by a pooled mean of 9.68 kg, with a 95% confidence interval from 15.84 kg lower to 3.51 kg lower.
The analysis also found reductions in systolic blood pressure of 4.77 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure of 1.41 mmHg. No significant differences were observed for the oxygen desaturation index or minimum oxygen saturation. The authors reported no increased risk of adverse events compared with control in the included trials.

Why does heterogeneity change the interpretation?
The pooled analysis showed substantial statistical heterogeneity. For the apnea-hypopnea index, I2 was 87%. For body weight, I2 was 98%. In a meta-analysis, a high I2 value signals that the study estimates differ more than would be expected from sampling variation alone. Differences in participant characteristics, treatment, follow-up, background care and study design may all contribute.
This does not make the result meaningless. It means the pooled number should not be treated as a guaranteed change for an individual participant or as a universal estimate for every GLP-1 receptor agonist. The study also focused on adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea, so the findings should not automatically be transferred to people with other forms or severities of sleep-disordered breathing.
Does this replace established sleep-apnoea care?
No. The authors explicitly state that the findings do not establish GLP-1 receptor agonist-based therapies as substitutes for continuous positive airway pressure. The paper places these therapies within comprehensive obstructive sleep apnea management rather than presenting them as a standalone answer. The distinction is important because the review assessed selected trial outcomes, while real-world care also depends on diagnosis, severity, symptoms, comorbidities, adherence and clinical follow-up.
